Coast Guard Hill – Marshfield, MA
Growing up in Marshfield Coast Guard Hill was pretty much just “the place to go sledding” but now as an adult I’ve really enjoyed taking my kids there. Never mind for the simple reason the giant hill really tires them out walking to the top, but the views are a-maz-ing. You can see basically all of Humarock when you reach the top and it’s incredible.
When you make it to the top of the hill there’s a bench there along with some trails through the woods. They loop around down, I think my son counted, 45 stairs to the Marshfield Recreaction Department building. I’ve heard in a recent Marshfield Zoning meeting they are planning on putting a playground at Coast Guard Hill which would be awesome, but for now there are a few things to climb on along with a little amphitheater. You can also play volleyball, basketball and partake in the community garden there when it’s up and running.
We’ve kayaked the South River behind the Rec Building but have never seen it from the land side and the views from the dock they have are fantastic.
There’s obviously a lot of history to this location, the Coast Guard used it as a communication center and the land was gifted to Marshfield in 2004. At the top of the hill you’ll also see the old Coast Guard House, which now is a privately owned home but used to be where the guardsman lived.
I love this area and think you need to take a trip there! And, if you’re going in the winter bring your sled because you’ll have so much fun sledding down but not so much walking back up.
