Turkey Hill & Weir River Farm – Hingham, MA
We’ve been to Weir River Farm a few times, for their open barnyard, the Farm Fall Festival and during the pandemic I booked the kids and our friends for one of the family animal encounters {although mommy had a liitttle bit to much wine the night before and didn’t make it to that one ;o)}
Today we parked in the parking lot on 3A in Hingham at the bottom of Turkey Hill and hiked to the top through the woods to the spectacular view of the Boston skyline. The hill itself is 187 feet from the bottom to the top, but it’s worth it on a clear day because you can see so far. Once you get to the top there are picnic tables for a quick snack before continuing a few different ways. The trail from Turkey Hill connects with a Whitney & Thayer Woods, and Weir River and also abuts Wampatuck State Park. It is a Trustees of the Reservations property so you can find more information regarding it on their website!
Weir River Farm itself is a different location but it was part of our adventure for today! It’s a great family spot and I would definitely suggest it as a place to visit with your kids. They have a whole bunch of animals, cows, pigs, chickens, goats, ponies and my son’s favorite, Ruby the llama. The Weir River Farm trail begins at the top of Turkey Hill and loops behind the livestock area. It’s all downhill, so the way back is a different story.
We really enjoyed this walk today, besides the fact that it was a beautiful day it was nice to be somewhere a little different. It’s been a while since we ventured into the city, and I miss seeing our friends that live there, so standing up looking over the hill seeing Boston made me hopeful we’ll be able to see them again soon.
Overall, there was one bridge from the parking lot to the start of the trail which my son saw immediately, but that was the only one. I don’t think a stroller would work out very well here, but if you park at the top of Turkey Hill you’ll be able to walk around the picnic area and enjoy the view with your babe in a one! I had my one year old in a carrier throughout, including the farm, but we’ve had them in a stroller there are well. Keep in mind though, you’ll want a jogger to push around, besides the fact that you’re on a farm, the walk to and from the parking lot can be a tad bit bumpy.
Weir River Farm is beautiful throughout all different times of year and one of the best is during peak foliage in the fall. From Boo in the Barnyard and the Not-so-spooky scavenger hunt to the Fall Festival there is a lot happening during that time of year. The number one reason to visit the farm though (aside from all the super cute new belted galloway calves they’ve added) the views atop the farm at Turkey Hill give a remarkable glance of orange, yellow and red leaves from land to sea to city. If you’re looking for a great way to spend the morning outside I definitely could not recommend Weir River Farm, a Trustees location any more!
