Leaf Turkey
I still can’t believe Thanksgiving is only a week away! If you’re house is anything like ours we have been teetering between Thanksgiving and Christmas since Halloween ended and the kids are loving every second of it! Although I am a big time summer gal, I do love a good fall day. I’m all for the fall fests, the changing of the leaves and come on, that crisp fall air really can’t be beat!
I’ve learned a few things over the last 5 1/2 years of being a mom and one of them is that there is just nothing more fun for these kids than making a giant pile of leaves and running full speed into it. Our little slice of heaven has it’s fair share of giant trees and falling leaves and this weekend we turned our raking chore into a fun little game. Looking to make a leaf turkey? All you’ll need are a few supplies and some eager kids looking to craft, plus they’ll be cleaning up the yard without even knowing it 🙂
The first items you’ll need to create these little fowls are some leaves, so grab a bag and head outside and make sure to pick the best and brightest ones you can find! We loaded up on some maple, oaks and even a few leaves that somewhat resembled turkey feathers!
After we gathered up our leaves we headed into the basement to dry them off and wipe off any crud that may have accumulated on them, including a few little slugs that were more than happy to be placed back outside then mushed around by a preschool and kindergartener.
Once our leaves were all cleaned off we gathered the remaining supplied, which included some white and brown construction paper, glue, scissors and of course our trusty googley-eye selection. From there I showed the kids some patterns to glue the leaves on and then they were off to the races!
These little turkeys are a fun and easy activity to keep your kids busy during that dreaded post school/pre dinner or post dinner/pre bedtime window! Although, thanks to daylight savings time, if you do allot to make them later on in the day the sun here now seems to set at 2pm so keep that in mind if you need to collect some leaves! And remember, when life does gives you leaves, don’t be afraid to jump in them :o)
