Crafts

One year old activities

It’s been about a month since I’ve had some quality time with my baby girl, thus is the life of a second child with a super silly (attention hogging) big bro 🙂 So, today me and my mini me spent all pre-nap time doing different sensory, sorting and easy to make diy activities.

I have four (eek) giant bins in our basement full of craft supplies, premade crafts from Michaels, stickers, paint, markers, you name it it’s probably down there, so we went down and grabbed a few “essentials” to get our morning started.

A few craft essentials: pompoms, old containers, popsicle sticks, painters tape, sensory objects.

Our first, and I think her favorite activities involved my two reused and cleaned containers, I keep basically everything that I can turn into a craft so these are from puffs and cornstarch. I cut a small hole in each one and then put some painters tape around the top so it wasn’t sharp where her little fingers would be touching. In the yellow tupperware she put the popsicle sticks and in the puffs she put pipe cleaners. She really enjoyed the popsicles sticks and got a little bit more frustrated with the pipe cleaners since they kept bending when she tried to put them in the wobbly puff jar.

Our next activity involved a few sensory bags I put together and we taped them to our paint tray so she could touch them. She enjoyed them for about 5 minutes until the activity became “un-tape the bags and try and open them”. I think I use painters tape in more than half of the crafts we do, and the majority of them don’t involve painting. It was one of the odd items I stocked up on back in beginning quarantine days almost a year ago (ugh). Rescuing the animals I think we do quite a bit, it’s really just grabbing a few of our LTD Toob Animals and taping them onto the tray. It always ends up being played with for about 20 minutes, which in mummy time is pretty long.

A favorite item in my craft bin is the pompom puff ball jug. My two kids can’t get enough of them, probably because it’s super fun to dump them out and then throw them all over the floor (giant eye roll). I have a mini whisk that has been confiscated by the kids for their kitchen set so I filled it with pom poms to let her little fingers try and pull them out. She LOVES that game, pull out the puffs and put them back in the container. It’s great for the ever evolving pincher grasp and good hand eye coordination to take them out of the whisk and then put them back in the container.

After a few hours of hard core play time, babygirl is now fast asleep in her cribby, so..now it’s time to clean, make dinner, use the elliptical, write a blog, feed the dogs, oh and get some work done before she wakes up.

Wish me luck! ;o)
